Walt Disney World has been closed for over a week now due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. It’s unprecedented to see Disney Parks closed for this length of time. The last time Walt Disney World closed is when Hurricane Irma hit Florida in 2017. Disney revealed in their shareholder meeting that this two day closure costed the Walt Disney Company $40 million in 2017. Analysts suggest the daily closure is costing $40 million every day for Disney with the current Coronavirus pandemic.
The Magic Kingdom alone attracts over 50,000 visitors each day. So being closed for over nine consecutive days means a significant amount of traffic has stopped for the Orlando theme parks. All construction projects are brought to a halt and it’ll be a while before they resume. Also, overnight curfews are in effect in Orange County. Even though Disney hasn’t announced a new reopening date, it does sit partly in Orange County, so this curfew does effect the surrounding Orlando area.
Disney Springs shopping areas and restaurants closed to the public last week. The temporary closure is impacting these stores and restaurants as well. The runDisney event scheduled for mid-April was canceled as a safety precaution to help maintain the CDC’s recommendation for social distancing.
