Hilary Duff and Creator Terri Minsky Are Hoping ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot Is Moved From Disney+ to Hulu. A few weeks ago production was halted on the Lizzie McGuire reboot over creative differences between Disney and the series showrunner and creator, Terri Minsky. The story goes, Disney was not happy with the content of the series and felt it was “not family/kid friendly” like the original series, when both Minsky and the shows star, Hilary Duff wanted to portray a more grown up version of Lizzie McGuire in 2020.
The cast and crew had managed to finish two episodes before Disney stopped production and ordered a rewrite for the series, and reportedly “fired” Terri Minsky from the project over creative differences.
“I am so proud of the two episodes we did,” Minsky told Variety. “Hilary has a grasp of Lizzie McGuire at 30 that needs to be seen. It’s a wonderful thing to watch. I would love the show to exist, but ideally I would love it if it could be given that treatment of going to Hulu and doing the show that we were doing. That’s the part where I am completely in the dark. It’s important to me that this show was important to people. I felt like I wanted to do a show that was worthy of that kind of devotion.”
Despite production setbacks, Disney still seems to want to change the course of the series to be more kid/family friendly and keep the reboot on Disney+, but there is always the possibility the series could be moved to Hulu to keep on track with the more grown-up version of Lizzie.
“We paused production on ‘Lizzie McGuire’ a few weeks ago to allow time for some creative re-development,” a representative from Disney said. “Our goal is to resume production and to tell an authentic story that connects to the millions who are emotionally invested in the character, and a new generation of viewers too.”
Fans have been very upset by news of the delay and are worried that creative differences will prevent the reboot from ever being finished or streamed. We hope the studio, Minsky and the cast can all come to an agreeable solution and give fans a ‘Lizzie McGuire’ reboot worthy of the wait.
