Progress at Disney Cruise Line’s Lighthouse Point

Progress at Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point

Disney Cruise Line has a new private island experience in the works. This new experience is in Eleuthera at Lighthouse Point.

The destination will create sustainable economic opportunities for Bahamians, protect and sustain the natural beauty of the site, celebrate culture, and help strengthen the community in Eleuthera. It will complement Castaway Cay, a Disney destination located in the Abaco chain of The Bahamas, giving families the opportunity to enjoy the site’s beautiful beaches and explore nature, as well as enjoy the broader tourism offerings in Eleuthera.

Disney Cruise Line has completed its purchase of the Lighthouse Point property and signed a Heads of Agreement with the government of The Bahamas. The design for Lighthouse Point will be inspired by the natural environment and rooted in the culture of Eleuthera and The Bahamas more broadly. Disney Cruise Line has partnered with the local creative community, led by artists Kevin Cooper and Antonius Roberts, to achieve this.

Construction will begin on the site after the Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan are accepted by the government, public consultation has occurred and all other necessary government permits and approvals have been granted.

In addition to its own animal and conservation experts, Disney assembled a team of highly qualified and experienced scientists and other professionals who spent more than two years developing a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Disney submitted the EIA to the BEST Commission in late December and has been advised that the BEST Commission will post the document on their website after their feedback is incorporated and government reviews are complete. Additional public consultation will occur as part of the site plan approval process. The EIA is based on extensive fieldwork, robust data collection and analysis, direct engagement with those who have studied the site and the species observed there, and an exhaustive review of available literature.

Over the past two years, Disney has had significant and meaningful engagement with the residents of Eleuthera and The Bahamas. Disney has held information sessions and met with hundreds of potential employees, vendors, tour operators, and others over the past year to further build relationships and maximize opportunities for Eleuthera and the greater Bahamas and will continue to do so. Disney is committed to working with the Government of The Bahamas, the local community and educational institutions to develop training and professional development programs for residents of Eleuthera and the greater Bahamas interested in working at Lighthouse Point. Hiring for operational roles is expected to begin in 2022.

This new Disney Cruise Line destination is bound to be magical and amazing! There’s also a website so you can track the progress of Lighthouse Point. Check it out here.
