Producer Jennifer Lee Shares If We Will See a ‘Frozen 3’ and Kristen Bell May Be the Key! Recently, Frozen franchise Co-Director and Writer, Jennifer Lee, spoke with HollywoodLife before the opening night of Frozen the Musical at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre on Dec. 6, to discuss her latest blockbuster hit, Frozen II, and the possibility of making a trilogy.
According to Lee, one of the films stars, Kristen Bell (Anna), was “instrumental” in the development of the story and music for Anna in the sequel, and is open to hearing her ideas for a third Frozen film.
“She is so talented. She was instrumental to Anna’s journey,” Jennifer told HL, “and I’m so proud that she joined us on saying, “Look, Anna’s … you look to her as the optimist [but] we all go through struggles. I have struggles every day, and I choose to be this way, and get up off the floor and never give up, and that was the journey that Anna should have.” And we agreed. So she’s been an incredible partner in it, so maybe she has a good idea [for Frozen 3].”
HL asked if Lee was ready to confirm a third film, and said for now she “feels done,” but to “ask again in a year”.
“As of now I feel done, but I’m also very tired, so ask me in a year,” Jennifer said. “The thing about Frozen 2 is it only came about because we said there is more story here. The girls have never been together. I want to see that. What is Elsa’s journey? Why does she have powers? Chris and I had so many questions, and the world was asking them, and we naively went, ‘Let’s do it!’ We had no idea what we were doing. We went into the unknown ourselves, and I’m glad we did, but it was so much harder to do 2 than it was to do 1. I can only imagine what 3 would be, how much harder that would be.”
“We’d never done a musical sequel before theatrically. There was no precedent. We wanted to do a story featuring the same characters, not just changing circumstances, growing them, changing them, changing characters people have come to know.” Lee continued, “All of those things we tackled we just said, ‘We must be crazy.’ But it felt right to us, but it was a four year journey and so I can only imagine if there were ever to come it would have to come with us feeling like it had to be told, because it is so hard to do. It takes everything you have, so right now we’ve got nothing in the tank. I’m looking to be filled up tonight with the performance.”

We need Frozen 3 or better yet, a TV series, because there are so many plotholes and things in Frozen II that need explaining. The main thing that needs to be done is to have Elsa move back into to Arendelle, because making her move into the woods with people she just met is so extreme and out of character for her. No reason she couldn’t live in Arendelle and visit the Enchanted Forest, instead of the other way around. Disney changed her too drastically and unrealistically, they made her too god-like, so I hope the next installment is about her balancing her powers with humanity and family life.
They also need to redeem Hans. His voice actor, Santino Fontana, was told years ago that they wanted to redeem him, but instead, all they do is childishly bash him in the film- as if we need reminders he was a villain. For six years, they hinted at a redemption arcb and released a book, called c”A Frozen Heart,” that while it may not be considered canon, it still goes into his backstory. His family abused and manipulated him horribly. It’s not an excuse for his actions, but they were more about getting away from his family than having power. He did the wrong thing, but there’s enough in his backstory that suggests he’s not so far gone that he can’t learn the errors of his ways and be a better person. It’d be a great message for kids about owning your actions and bettering yourself.
I really hope we get more Frozen content, sooner than later, because my anxiety can’t wait another six years. But I really hope whatever’s next fixes all the issues with Frozen II and Elsa.
Frozen 3 should incorporate a struggle between the sisters on how to raise Anna’s children when it’s discovered they have powers…Elsa believes taking them to be raised in the enchanted woods is best where as Anna wants them close to her always and being queen can’t just up and move
