‘Captain Marvel 2‘ Announced By Marvel Studios During Comic Con. One of the best places to first hear about news in entertainment is at San Diego Comic Con, where the stars and fans come together to celebrate all things entertainment.
One of the most highly anticipated panels of the weekend was Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel during the 2019 San Diego Comic Con. For months there has been buzz about the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and speculation on the rumored films and shows that will appear in theaters and on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney Plus (Disney+). Fans were excited to hear about confirmations, dispelling of rumors, and for the future of the franchise.
Though we will be sharing a ton of information regarding the future of the MCU over the coming week, one of the most exciting and slightly overlooked bits of information from the weekend was Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige’s confirmation that an untitled “Captain Marvel 2” is in the works!
A release date and casting information has yet to be shared, other than the return of Oscar Winning Actress Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Though the film is expected to make its appearance on the big screen in either 2022 or 2023 in that sweet spot of 3-4 years between films that has been wildly successful for Marvel Studios in the past.
Captain Marvel was the first female led film in the MCU, though the franchise is riddled with amazing and talented female characters, it appears the studio is making headway in providing more diversity in their lead roles for their films and new Disney+ series.
Primary examples of the new wave of diversity coming to the MCU were revealed at the “Phase 4” Panel at San Diego Comic Con in Hall H. The now titled Black Widow film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and WandaVision Disney+ Series, are just a few examples of how Marvel Studios plans on moving forward and being good stewards of progress in the future of film making.
Marvel’s current schedule for Phase 4 of the MCU is as follows:
- May 1, 2020: Black Widow
- Fall, 2020: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Disney+)
- November 6, 2020: Eternals
- February 12, 2021: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
- Spring, 2021: Loki (Disney+)
- May 7, 2021: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
- Spring, 2021: WandaVision (Disney+)
- Summer, 2021: What If….?
- Fall, 2021: Hawkeye (Disney+)
- November 5, 2021: Thor: Love and Thunder
There does not seem to be a realistic placement for Captain Marvel 2 in Phase 4, so more than likely Captain Marvel will return either as a smaller role in another film before getting her own sequel, or she may take the lead in Phase 5 of the MCU sometime in 2022 or 2023 and be released in a similar time frame as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the currently untitled Black Panther 2.
