Robert Downey Jr. May Return to the MCU as an A.I. Program. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who would be self-absorbed enough to upload a version of their consciousness into an Artificial Intelligence program for use in case of an untimely death?
First and foremost, we already have seen this sort of behavior in Professor Arnim Zola, who downloaded “his brain,” as he put it, into a computer system to oversee Hydra’s take over of S.H.I.E.L.D. long past the death of his human body. Another Marvel character may have been inspired to do the same thing, this time with much nobler intentions. That person? Anthony Edward Stark, better known as Tony Stark.
In Marvel Comics Ironheart series, Riri Williams, a young and talented engineer, builds her own Iron Man styled armor and catches the attention of Tony Stark himself. Stark saw William’s potential and talent and decided to send her a Stark A.I. to help her in her endeavors. Riri eventually takes up the mantle of Iron Man with her own moniker, Ironheart, after Tony is put into a coma.
Though Marvel has not stated any public plans to incorporate Ironheart into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), the ground work may have been laid in Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Don’t worry! We won’t put any spoilers in here about the latest film, but after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home it would be easy to see how Tony could “return” as Artificial Intelligence. Possibly making an appearance down the line in either an Ironheart film or the Spider-Man franchise.
How would it work? Cinematically speaking, the A.I. would work similarly to J.A.R.V.I.S. and F.R.I.D.A.Y. but with some sort of hologram like how Tony appeared at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
Robert Downey Jr. is more than deserving of a break from filming and coordinating with Marvel Studios while he focuses on other projects and his family. As much as we would love to see RDJ return to the big screen, an early return can undermine Tony’s actions in Avengers: Endgame and take away from the future of the franchise.
As Marvel Studios has proven, nothing is final, and there are many ways Downey could return to the MCU. We hope he enjoys a well deserved break, and would love to see him return at a later date to help the young heroes rising on the horizon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I would rather see him come back as an LMD. He even joked about being one in the first Avengers movie, so it’s not totally impossible.
