Is our favorite nanny, Mary Poppins, returning to 17 Cherry Tree Lane for a third time? Rob Marshal, the director of Mary Poppins Returns, has recently stated he is absolutely working on a sequel to the film. None of this has been confirmed officially by Disney. However, Emily Blunt has already stated she would return to the role in an instant.
The original Mary Poppins was released in 1964, starring Julie Andrews as the nanny who visit 17 Cherry Tree Lane to help fix the Banks household problems. In the 2018 version, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary now returns to the children of the first movie who are now grown up. With the help of Michael’s children, Mary helps Michael and Jane again. Despite there being a 54-year gap in the two films, it’s clear the original (and now sequel) are still a favorite.
The character of Mary Poppins was created by P.L. Travers, broken into eight books. Marshal reiterates there is plenty of material to “mine.” -Screenrant
Although Mary Poppins Returns was not pulled from one particular book in the series, the movie pieced together many aspects to create the practically perfect new story.
Marshal dreams of making Mary Poppins the next Star Wars or James Bond series. He says, “Listen, how many Star Wars films have there been, you know what I mean? Or James Bond films. If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?” (For the record, I agree completely.)
This could all be Marshal running down a rabbit hole, of course. However, the love Mary Poppins Returns has received from the audience is astounding and undeniable. My fingers are crossed Emily Blunt becomes the first female James Bond. Perhaps that’ll never happen, but she could always become her 007.
