Princesses have been a part of the “Disney” identity since the release of Snow White in 1937. Generations of little girls have grown into women dreaming and singing along with a bevy of beautiful princesses. Although Disney executives recently indicated that they are abandoning the long beloved tradition of princesses and fairy tales in favor of more “hot and hip” heroines, it seems that at least within the Walt Disney parks the Princess is still in vogue.
With the increased success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the addition of Angelica’s spunky character, the princess merchandise at the Disney parks has branched out into a new Pirate Princess collection. Although pirate princess merchandise appeared in the parks sporadically over the past 5 years, a collection of products was announced in April 2011.
These products are available at the Pirates Bazaar shop at the exit of Pirates of the Caribbean. Some may also be found at the World of Disney store at Downtown Disney. Interestingly, the pirate princess line seems targeted at the tween through adult range. Disney seems to believe that the combination of freedom, adventure, and feminine “princess” will appeal to an older audience and keep their connection with an older cadre of princesses.
The new line ranges from purely feminine to the slightly “gothy,” although almost all items include feminine touches. Prices are, however, a bit higher for the “feminine” pirate princess items than for the more standard pirates items, with shirts and hoodies starting around $32 and going up to $75.
