Keira Knightly has recently stated that her daughter isn’t allowed to watch two of Disney’s most iconic animated films: “Cinderella” and “The Little Mermaid”.
In a recent interview with Ellen Degeneres the star, who has had several prominent parts in Disney movies herself, said that she has a problem with the message sent to young girls in these two films.
Her reasoning behind this decision? About Cinderella, she told Ellen, “[Cinderellla] waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t! Rescue yourself. Obviously!”
With regards to “The Little Mermaid”, she takes issue with the fact that Ariel gives up her voice to be with a man. The decision seems to be firmly rooted in maternal concern rather than any personal dislike for the film. She stated “And this is the one that I’m quite annoyed about because I really like the film. I love The Little Mermaid! That one’s a little tricky – but I’m keeping to it.”
Not all Disney movies are banned from her home. She told Ellen that she adores Dory, (which garnered laughs from the audience as you might expect) and that “Frozen is huge, Moana is totally fine.”
Keira Knightly is best known, in Disney circles, as Elizabeth Turner from The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Notably, she is currently promoting a new Disney film, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” in which she plays the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Keira Knightly isn’t the only one taking this stand either. Kristen Bell, who plays the voice of Anna In “Frozen”, has come out saying that she is uncomfortable with t ideas expressed in “Snow White”. She hasn’t banned it in her home but did say that she has a talk with her kids after they watch the movie asking questions like “Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? Because you can not kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”
