Disney Cruise Line fans may have much more to look forward to soon! The Nassau Guardian is reporting that Disney has just been given the go-ahead for a brand new cruise port at Lighthouse Point, South Eleuthera as it expands it’s ports of call in the Bahamas. Over the next three years, they will add 3 new cruise ships to the islands.
A member of the Bahamian Economic Council reportedly released a statement stating that “Negotiations will now begin on a Heads of Agreement, which will detail the scope of the project, the obligations of the Disney Cruise Lines Island Development Ltd. and the obligations of the government of The Bahamas. The negotiation of the Heads of Agreement will commence immediately. When concluded, it will be presented to Parliament in keeping with the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.”
While a backlash is expected due to environmental concerns concerning the new port, Disney is reportedly giving 190 acres to the Bahamian Government for the creation of a national park.
Additionally, the proposal will create an estimated 150 local jobs and create additional tourism and entrepreneurial opportunities in the new port.
We can’t wait to see this story develop and see exactly what Disney has in store for the island!
