Disney had confirmed the Disneytoon Studios closing. This Glendale-based outfit was spearheaded by former Disney animation chief John Lasseter and will be shutting down.
“After much consideration, we have made the decision to end production activity and close Disneytoon Studios,” said a company spokesperson in a brief statement that was released.
Disneytoon Studios currently employs about 75 animators and staffers. Those employees will be laid off, though some could transition to roles at Disney or Pixar.
Best known for the home entertainment franchise Disney Faries and the Planes franchise, the scale of the projects taken on by Disneytoon was more modest than the big-budget films we expect from Pixar and Disney Animation.
Pete Docter and Jennifer Lee officially replaced Lasseter as animation head this month. This came after a “sabbatical” in late 2017 that was the result of Lasseter admitting to a pattern of inappropriate conduct with employees.
Meredith Roberts had been the Disneytoon SVP and general manager since 2008.
