More than a generation ago when Walt and Roy Disney were dreaming of transforming citrus groves and rural swampland into what would become Walt Disney World Resort, Tom DeWolf was right there with them thinking of plans to deliver the roads, utilities and other municipal services that would help make that dream a reality.
After 46 years of service to Reedy Creek Improvement District, including his tenure as the first district administrator and later serving as chairman of Reedy Creek’s Board of Supervisors for the past 25 years, DeWolf is retiring from the board but he leaves behind an amazing legacy.
“Tom DeWolf is one of those rare individuals who has played a major role in changing, for the better, his home state of Florida,” said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “Great teams need great leaders, and I truly don’t think Walt Disney World would be the place it is today were it not for the foundations laid so many years ago and the careful stewardship Tom DeWolf has extended to the District over the years.”
DeWolf says he’s leaving Reedy Creek Improvement District in great hands. Vice Chairman Don Greer, who has served on the board since 1975, will take over as chairman. Retired Reedy Creek District Administrator Tom Moses will replace DeWolf on the board.
After presiding over more than 100 service award ceremonies for Reedy Creek emergency services, DeWolf became the center of attention as the district’s firefighters and paramedics came together to honor at the longtime board chairman at his retirement ceremony. DeWolf also received a memento for earning the prestigious Colonel Joe Potter award, one of only a handful of recipients who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to Reedy Creek Improvement District.
DeWolf told well-wishers that he was touched by all of the gifts and accolades – especially the unveiling of a new name for the room where board members will meet each month: The Thomas B. DeWolf Boardroom.
