Hundreds of Haitian Disney Employees Could Lose Protective Status and Have to Leave U.S.

Cinderella Castle

Approximately 500 Haitian Walt Disney World employees could be losing their protective status after the latest Trump administration recommendation was released from the federal immigration agency. This temporary protection is currently extended to over 50,000 Haitians living in the United States.

In 2010, tens of thousands of Haitians were invited to apply for this temporary status when a massive earthquake struck Haiti. This invitation has been extended multiple times for different national crises including Hurricane Matthew, a cholera epidemic, and political turmoil.

Both Disney and union officials from Unite Here, which represents many of Disney’s workers, are asking for the extension of this protection for the Haitian people.

The Walt Disney Co. gave a statement saying that “given the current situation in Haiti we support efforts to extend the Temporary Protected Status for Haitian nationals. The more than 500 cast members who are currently part of this program have been and are an important part of our Walt Disney World workforce in Central Florida.”

The many supporters of the protective status extension are concerned for the well being of the 50,000 Haitians currently living in the United States and also for the families still living in Haiti who rely on the income coming from their family living here.
