As a huge Disney fan, I was ecstatic for this past Friday, as all my fellow Disney fans know that the day a new Disney animated film comes out is quite special. Not only because we all get to see and discuss a spectacular new movie, but we know that with each Disney animated film also comes a film that will be in our hearts for years to come. A staple in the household to watch again and again, and possibly inspire new additions to our beloved Disney parks. Since each Disney animated film is incredibly special and unique, it is no surprise that “Zootopia”, the latest Disney Animation Studios feature film, starring Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin was the top film this weekend at the box office.
Not only was it the top movie this weekend, but it broke a Disney box office record, being the biggest Walt Disney Animation Studios opening weekend of all time, even bigger than its predecessors “Frozen” (opening at $67.4 million) and “Big Hero 6,” ($56 million) pulling in $73.7 million, according to current earnings and studio estimates. Although “Zootopia” just opened here in the U.S., it is on its fourth international weekend, now having earnings of $158.8 million worldwide. It has also ranked as being the fourth biggest March opening weekend of all time, as well as become the biggest Thursday night opening for a non-summer Disney animated movie.
These outstanding box office numbers come as no surprise to me, having seen “Zootopia” opening day and being absolutely blown away by it. Not only are the characters very likeable and the animation stunning, but the story is very well written and relevant to topics of discussion in today’s society. Also the utilization of classic Disney storytelling using anthropomorphic animals is appealing and drawing audiences in.
With “Zootopia” being so popular, I’m excited to think of what ways we might see them incorporated into Disney parks. We know that coming soon we will see Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps for a meet and greet, perhaps Disney might in the future add a 3D show where we explore the different districts of “Zootopia” or maybe even a dark ride. I think a dark ride incorporating animatronics as well as 3D (such as in Ratatouille: The Adventure ride in Disneyland Paris) would be quite an experience!
