Disney Dream – Patience for the Porthole

Disney Dream – Patience for the Porthole

When I booked my room aboard the Disney Dream, my goal was to get a room aboard the ship at the lowest cost.  I prefer to take more vacations per year, rather than staying in luxurious accommodations only one time per year.  So, when I received confirmation of my inside stateroom, I mentioned to my friend my accommodation type.  She exclaimed, “You will have a virtual porthole!”  She explained that for those few rooms aboard the Disney Dream without a window, a virtual porthole would be included.  Here the guests would see a view of the outside of the ship.  The added bonus was that Disney characters would also visit the porthole!

When we got to our room aboard the Disney Dream, we were quick to turn on the porthole by flipping on a switch beside the bed (you have the ability to turn it on or off throughout the day).  We found that we had a camera shot of Port Canaveral right there in our room.  As we unpacked, we would glance over to the porthole.  I mentioned to my family to be sure to look for Disney characters in the porthole.  After unpacking, we still had not seen any characters.  When it was nearly time for dinner, I went to the restroom to begin getting ready.  Right after getting in the shower, I heard my son exclaim, “I see UP! Daddy!”  So, I had missed the first sighting.  Wouldn’t you know it!

Not being discouraged, I began the final steps to being ready for dinner in the main stateroom while also trying my best to focus on the porthole.  Instead I spent my time helping tie shoes or look for the right socks for my son’s outfit.  I missed another 2 sighting, only seeing small bits of pixie dust fade from the porthole screen.

I only saw 2 different characters in the virtual porthole over the course of our 4 night’s stay aboard the Disney Dream!  Perhaps I just do not have enough patiences to watch the porthole.  Or perhaps I am a glancer, only giving the virtual porthole a few seconds of my time.  Who knows!  I will say that my son loved having the porthole there.  I loved being able to take a quick glance at it to see if we had arrived at port yet or had left for the open seas again.  Disney’s innovative ways always amaze me, even if I only get a few small glances!
