Disneyland’s grand opening on July 17, 1955 was definitely less than perfect. My mother in law was there (her uncle was a contractor who helped build the park) and told me that the asphalt was still wet in places due to the fact that they had poured it that morning and with temperatures hitting 101º it didn’t have time to set for the park opening at 4:30 in the afternoon. Also, many water fountains were not functioning because of a plumber’s strike. More people showed up than anticipated. Only 6,000 guests were invited for the preview opening but an additional 22,000 showed up with counterfeit tickets which led to a chaotic day. None the less, it was magical and it marked a turning point in entertainment and theme parks as we know it. Disneyland opened with 18 attractions, compared with the 62 that exist today. Walt said at the time that Disneyland would never be completed, and 59 years later, that is still true.
This year on July 17th, Disneyland celebrated it’s 59th Birthday. While there was a small show at the Train Station to commemorate the day, the real focus was the HUGE celebration planned for July 17, 2015 – Disneyland’s 60th Birthday! A gorgeous “diamond” logo was revealed and there are grand plans over the next 12 months for what will surely be a day to remember!
Check out this video that was filmed for the Disneyland 59th celebration.
I already have my hotel room booked for the 60th birthday celebration and cannot wait! I know that I am looking forward to new merchandise (come on Dooney & Bourke, we need a Disneyland 60th print!), entertainment and some one of a kind offerings.
Were you at Disneyland for their 59th birthday? Will you be there for their 60th birthday? If so, I will see you there!
