What may be the one piece of advice to keep you from pulling your hair out on your perfect Disney vacation? Take an afternoon break!
Going to Disney can be a phenomenal, overwhelming, costly, and exciting experience. Often families want to make sure that they see and do as many attractions and shows as possible to get the best value for their money. People even stay in the parks from open to close. As tempting as it is to do the parks commando style, consider taking an afternoon break. The Disney heat can be an even greater incentive for your family to head back to your resort and relax.
Taking an afternoon break can allow your family to re-group and re-charge, helping to calm any frayed nerves. You can easily arrange your family’s daily trip plans to include some needed afternoon downtime for the family. If you are staying at a Disney resort, remember to take advantage of morning or evening Extra Magic Hours to increase your park time and decrease waiting time due to lower crowd levels.
When my family takes an afternoon break, we often go back to our resort to take a nap, go for a swim, or check out resort activities. It was hard for us at first to not do commando trips because we wanted to immerse our family in as much Disney as possible. During those trips, we had to be prepared for possible child meltdowns because they were just too overstimulated. The afternoon breaks really made a difference in the quality and feeling of our family’s Disney vacations.
Does your family take afternoon breaks or do you go commando style to the parks? What does your family do during its afternoon breaks to relax? We would love to hear your thoughts!

We definitely take a break in the afternoon, around 3 or so. We head back to our hotel, swim and/or nap, then go to dinner before heading back to the parks (Disneyland’s a two-hour time jump for us, being from the Midwest). It makes a big difference – it’s a great way to relieve stress (good stress, but stress) during the day and to ease back into being in the parks.
On our last trip, our daughter was 8 months old. Since our length-of-stay plans had been shortened, we did the parks “commando-style”; this didn’t present us with a problem, as our little one snoozed in her stroller whenever she wanted. Of course, she also slept like a rock, so light/noise didn’t bother her.
I’m hoping that on our next trip, we will be able to have a longer vacation. I’d much rather just head out to the parks later in the day than taking a break in the afternoon, though. My problem is that our daughter would have a meltdown if we TRY to leave the park before it closed. She has meltdowns on a regular basis when we have to leave the local playground; I can only imagine how bad it would be if we were trying to take her out of MK before the place kicked us out.
