Staying Safe at Walt Disney World

Too many times families travel to Walt Disney World and they aren’t as safe as they are back home.  Being in such a magical place often times causes people to let their guard down.  Here are a few simple reminders for staying safe at Walt Disney World in your hotel and in the parks.

At the hotel:

  • Always lock the doors of your room and car.  Even when you are in your room, you need to keep the door locked.  Too many times people use the lock to prop open their hotel door and things get swiped.  Don’t let this happen to you.  When your car is in the parking lot, remember to lock the doors.
  • Use the safe located in each room.  These are there for a reason!  If you have valuables that are too big for the safe, ask the front desk if they can hold it for you.  Don’t leave valuables in your suitcase or in the hotel dresser.  These are the first places people will look for “stuff” if they get in your room.

  • Report anyone wanting to get in your room to the front desk.  Personally, I have never had anyone approach my room while at Walt Disney World, but others have.  If you are not expecting someone, (mousekeeping, food delivery, a friend, etc) don’t open the door.  If they persist, call the front desk.
  • Call Disney security if you feel there is a need.  If you see someone suspicious, call.  If there is a true emergency, always call 911.
  • Always follow pool rules and hours.  These are posted for a reason- to keep you and your family safe.  Be smart around the pools.
  • Never leave children unattended.  This should be a no brainer, but it happens all the time.  Don’t leave your children at the pool, in the room, in the arcade or food court without an adult.  Too many things can happen and yes, bad things do happen at Walt Disney World.  If you feel the need to leave your kids alone, line up a babysitter.  Concierge will be able to assist with this.

At the parks:

  • Follow attraction rules and listen to cast members.  Again, these rules are posted for a reason and cast members are trained to keep guests safe.  If you are traveling with children, especially follow the rules and listen.  What are you teaching your kids when you break rules that could potentially harm you or them?
  • Follow safety signs on attractions.  While some of the safety restrictions may seem “childish” or incorrect to you, they are to keep you safe.  If a sign says people with back or neck problems should not ride, don’t ride if you do have these problems.  Pregnant women should also follow the advice on the signs.  Nobody wants to get off an attraction hurt- especially if it could have been avoided.
  • Carry bags you can keep your eye on.  Consider carrying a bag that goes across your body instead of a backpack style.  That way you can watch it and it’s always close.  It’s much harder for someone to get something out of your bag when it’s by your hip.
  • Attach your phone number to your kid.  You can use tattoos, bracelets, or a sharpie marker to make sure your child has your cell phone number on their body each day.  If you do get separated, it’s much easier for a cast member to find you if your child can share your number.
