It looks like the hunt for a director for the new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film is finally winding down. We’ve been hearing for some time now that a new ‘Pirates’ film was in development, with the most recent development coming from Jeff Nathanson being hired to write the script. But since then, news has been very quite on the film’s production, which left many wondering what was happening with the series. Most assumed that Rob Marshall, who directed the fourth installment in the series, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’, would be coming back to helm the fifth film in Disney’s lucrative franchise. But it seems that won’t be the case after all, because word is that Disney has narrowed its choices down to a few candidates, and Marshall’s name is not among them.

Deadline broke the news that there are three options now in Disney’s sights. The first director, Frederick Bond, is the favorite pick by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and apparently has been a front runner for quite a while. The second is a duo by the names of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, who are a very hot commodity in the industry right now, after their widely popular film ‘Kon-Tiki’ debuted. They just left Legendary Pictures, where they were supposed to do another film, so this makes them open game, and Disney just may jump at the chance to get them. The final choice is the most well known name of the batch, Rubert Sanders, as he directed last year’s ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, starring Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth. It’s a very interesting set of choices, and I’m not sure exactly where I stand on who I’d like to see get the gig. I’m really pulling for the least well known of the group right now, just because I really believe this series needs new blood to continue, so with a new director and new writer now in the mix, I think it could really make the series fresh and exciting. Deadline says we’ll know by the end of the month who will get the gig, because the film is set to start production soon, to make it’s July 10, 2015 release date.
