It’s never too early to start planning your next Walt Disney World vacation, and Disney at Christmastime is something you definitely have to see at least once in your lifetime. The decorations, the music, the food – its all amazing. One thing that is a 100% must see for a WDW Christmas vacation is the Osborne Family Spectacle Of Dancing Lights

Osb Before

If you are strolling through the Streets Of America during the daytime from mid-November to early January when the Lights are setup, it may not seem that appealing – tons of wires and metal figures cover every surface – and it’s only at night that they come alive! The Spectacle began in 1986 in Arkansas as Jennings Osborne adorned his home with Christmas lights (upon his daughter’s request!). It grew every year as many more lights, colors, and sculptures were added – they even had a 75-foot tall Christmas tree covered in lights! In 1995, when legal (and traffic) complications were threatening to shut them down – Mickey stepped in and offered the Osborne’s a permanent place to house their display – Disney World!

It’s a display of millions of LED lights that cover Disney’s Hollywood Studios Streets Of America area. They are lit nightly at dusk – Goofy and a special helper flip the giant switch that bring the lights to life!

These are no ordinary Christmas lights – there are fixtures that spin and move, and the lights change and blink in time to classic Christmas songs. The lights wrap the buildings, and they change hues and brightness as the music surrounds you – familiar holiday shapes include a carousel of angels, you soldiers, and Santa and his reindeer

My family and I were lucky enough to get to check these out on Christmas Day this past year – and I have to say, watching the lights go on and getting to enjoy the Spectacle actually brought a tear to my eye. It was the perfect place to spend the evening on Christmas Day with my family, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Oh, and did I mention that they make it SNOW too? Talk about getting into the holiday spirit!

Are you planning on checking out WDW at Christmas time? If you are, then I HIGHLY recommend that you check out the Osborne Lights – the history behind it is pretty cool, not to mention it really is an amazing display!

  1. We love this and hit it twice if we can! I’ve seen it off-and-on through the years, and seen it growing more and more elaborate. We’ve planned our trip around the holidays the last 2 years, so we’ve gotten to enjoy it the last 2 years. However, awhile back, I read in the comments of, I believe, Chip and Co, that last year was the final year for it as they were knocking down that area to make room for the Cars attraction or something. Has anyone else heard anything about that??
