DISNEY DREAM AT CASTAWAY CAY

A 37-year-old man from North Carolina was charged with robbing a credit union after police say he told investigators that he felt “pressured” to fulfill a promise to buy his girlfriend’s children tickets for a Disney cruise vacation.

Satellite Beach police reported that the man, who has been identified as Cedrick Royce Swinson, and his girlfriend drove overnight to Brevard County to take their Disney cruise when he found out that the cash for his final payment on the tickets was not available for withdrawal.

“He claimed he had money in the bank but that he couldn’t get access to it or that they had a hold on it,” said Cmdr. Brad Hodge of the Satellite Beach Police Department. “He said he felt pressured to follow through with his promise to take (the girlfriend and her two children) on a Disney cruise and decided to rob the credit union.”

The robbery took place around 10:40 a.m. at the Navy Federal Credit Union in the Atlantic Shopping Plaza at Scorpion Lane and A1A in Satellite Beach, according to Florida Today. Satellite Beach police were alerted by a bank alarm and deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded within minutes.

Witnesses told police that the robber walked into the bank and gave a note demanding cash and also implied he had a weapon. Hodge reported that Swinson then left the building and got into a white sport utility vehicle with his girlfriend and her 11- and 6-year-old children inside. Satellite Beach found the SUV about five minutes later and conducted a traffic stop as it rode along the westbound lane of the Pineda Causeway. Officers, with their weapons drawn, then took Swinson into custody. The police also questioned Swinson’s girlfriend, but do not believe she was aware of his plan.

“She was horrified and the children were upset. They drove here overnight from Charlotte for a cruise. They didn’t know he was going to do this,” Hodge said. Swinson was taken to the Brevard County Jail Complex where he was booked on robbery, grand theft and driving on a suspended license charge, records show.
