Orlando Airport - Uber and Lyft

Starting as early as July 1st, visitors landing at the Orlando airport could see a lot more transportation options. A new bill was signed by Florida Governor Rick Scott last month that would allow ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft to pick passengers up from the Orlando International Airport.

Currently, travelers have the option to use taxis or Uber Premium services (Uber SELECT and Uber SELECTXL) to pick them up at the airport. As of right now, Lyft is prohibited from picking up at the Orlando Airport but they can drop-off passengers. Once the bill goes into effect Lyft and all levels of Uber will have the same opportunities.

Uber and Lyft have become very popular over the years as they have introduced a more cost-effective means of public transportation. The images above shows a comparison of taking Uber vs. a taxi from EPCOT to the Orlando Airport. The top image shows the price of a Mears taxi and the bottom image shows the different price levels for Uber.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday to discuss new rules for ride sharing companies before making a vote. Among the topics to be discussed will be pickup locations and the airport’s intended pick-up charge for ride-shared cars.

Currently, Uber Premium passengers are picked up on Level 1 (Express Pickup Terminal). It is proposed that starting in July, Uber and Lyft will pick passengers up on Level 2.

The Orlando Airport’s intended pick-up charge for ride-sharing cars will be a heated topic at the public hearing. The proposed amount is $5.80 for each ride-share pickup which is the same amount charged for pre-arranged taxi rides. Taxis who pick up fares on-demand are charged $3.30. These charges may be passed on to the passenger which could effect cost savings of choosing companies like Uber and Lyft.

Do you use ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft when you travel? Will you be using them on your next trip to Orlando?
