Entertainment Weekly has released their annual Comic-Con preview issue featuring Marvel‘s Black Panther cast on the cover and a more in-depth look at the characters in the upcoming film. The movie is set to debut in theaters February 16th, 2017 with a story line centering around T’Challa, King of the technologically advanced African nation Wakanda, and his journey to protect his people and their land.
Let’s take a look at the star-studded cast and the characters they will be portraying on-screen:
- Chadwick Boseman – Boseman will star as Wakanda’s King, T’Challa. With superhuman strength many may view him as a hero, but T’Challa’s focus is on his politics and what he can do to protect his people and their way of life.
- Lupita Nyong’o – Academy Award-winning Nyong’o will no doubt be amazing in the role of Wakanda’s undercover spy, Nakia. The weapons-wielding operative is sent out to gather information on what is happening around the world outside of Wakanda.
- Michael B. Jordan – Jordan plays Erik Killmonger, exiled from his homeland of Wakanda, Killmonger teams up with Ulysses Klaue in an attempt to steal Wakanda’s Vibranium – the most rare and advanced metal on Earth.
- Angela Bassett – Advising T’Challa in all aspects of his life, Bassett takes on the role of Romanda former Queen of Wakanda, and mother of T’Challa.
- Danai Gurira – On screen Gurira will portray Okoye, leader of the Dora Milaje, an all-female special soldiers unit that protects the king an Wakanda from harm.
- Letitia Wright – Wright will bring to life the role of T’Challa’s younger sister Shuri. Incredibly intelligent and leader of the Wakandan design group, Shuri is responsible for the technology created with the Vibranium in Wakanda.
- Forest Whitaker – Whitaker plays the shaman Zuri, as a long time adviser to T’Challa’s father he is also the keeper of the Heart-Shaped Herb. Enriched with Vibranium from the land, when consumed, the herb gives Wakandan leader his superhuman strength.
- Daniel Kaluuya – In the role of W’Kabi, Kaluuya portrays T’Challa’s best friend. W’Kabi works as leader of security for the Border Tribe – Wakanda’s first line of defense.
