Disneynature has done it again! From the studio that brought you the captivating films earth, oceans, African Cats, and Chimpanzee comes Wings of Life,  “a stunning adventure full of intrigue, drama and mesmerizing beauty.”

Wings of Life is the latest documentary from Disneynature. Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress, Meryl Streep, the film takes an up-close look at some of the littlest things on our planet that make the biggest impact on life as we know it.

Unlike its Disneynature predecessors that followed the daily lives and life spans of particular species, Wings of Life focuses (and very closely, I might add) on the correlation blossoms, birds, bees, bats, and butterflies have on the earth’s life cycle—how their activities, that may seem trivial to us, affect not only plants and animals in nature, but also food provision for humankind.

The story is told with evolutionary overtones, using the theory to explain how certain creatures and/or plants adapted over time. While I do not subscribe to that belief system personally, I did not find it offensive or overwhelming. I found that once the dialog moved past that portion, seeing creation in action was really quite captivating! You see the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, from mating habits to egg-laying to larva and metamorphosis. You see hummingbirds battle for territory. You see bumble bees “buzz pollinate” flowers. You see bats feed with their hours-old infants clutching their bellies. The details and clarity are spectacular!

From an educator’s perspective, Wings of Life is a nice introduction to “the birds and the bees” discussion. My elementary-aged children watched the film with me, and actually asked several questions throughout the viewing. I was disappointed there were no featured extras on the disc or online as there have been with previous Disneynature releases, but overall I found Wings of Life a refreshing—and beautiful—reminder that the little things do matter.

The DVD/Blu-ray combo will be released on April 16, 2013, for the suggested retail price of $27.99 (available for pre-order online). As with previous Disneynature films, a portion of the proceeds from Wings of Life benefit the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. And in case you were wondering, there is another film in the works! The Wings of Life DVD contains a sneak peek at the upcoming Disneynature Bears, to be released on Earth Day, 2014.
