WDW Black History Month

During the month of February, Epcot’s American Adventure Pavilion is celebrating Black History month. So, if you happen to be at Walt Disney World this month, stop in to learn about how African-American culture has influenced America. Here are some of the activities:

Epcot’s Kinsey Collection

Re-Discovering America: Family Treasures From the Kinsey Collection” located in Epcot’s American Adventure Pavilion showcases artifacts, art, books, and documents from over 400 years of history. Whoopi Goldberg and Diane Sawyer are some of several celebrities whose voices provide narration from touch screen. The collection has recently added three new pieces:

  • “Banneker’s Almanack and Ephemeras” by Benjamin Banneker – Published in 1771, this is the mechanical and mathematical workings of Benjamin Banneker.
  • “My Bondage and My Freedom” by Frederick Douglass – Published in 1855, this first edition book is the autobiography of Frederick Douglas, detailing his life as a slave and free man
  • “Survivor” by Elizabeth Catlett – Created in 1983 this block print was inspired by the photograph “Ex-slave with a Long Memory” taken by Dorthea Lang
