The Walt Disney Studios and Steven Spielberg are bringing their expertise to co-produce and co-finance The BFG. Although, Spielberg has produced numerous Disney movies, this marks his first time directing. The announcement of this partnership practically guarantees the success of The BFG .
Playing the “BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) is Mark Rylance and newcomer Ruby Barnhill will star as Sophie. Giants in the movie will be played by Bill Hader, Jemaine
“In more than 40 years of making movies, I have been on the producing end of a number of films for The Walt Disney Company, but never as a director,” said Steven Spielberg. “It is a special joy to be in the director’s chair as we start ‘The BFG,’ alongside my long-time friends and film collaborators Kathy Kennedy, who introduced me to this project, Frank Marshall and Melissa Mathison. Together with them and Disney, there are many reasons why I am so excited about this joint venture.”
The BFG which is already under production in Vancouver, brings us Roald Dahl’s story, of a young girl (Sophie) who befriends a mysterious Giant and together they discover the magic and dangers of Giant Country.
Along with Mr. Spielberg will be Frank Marshall and Sam Mercer in the producer chairs, Adam Somner is a co-producer and Kathleen Kennedy, John Madden, Michael Siegel and Kristie Macosko Krieger are on board as executive producers.
The BFG comes to theatres July 2016.
