Yesterday, I had a chance to go out to the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles, CA, to get a first ever look at the new Disney game and platform, ‘Disney Infinity‘. Imagine a world inhabited by all your favorite Disney characters, where anything can happen, as long as you have the imagination to make it happen. This is the world of ‘Disney Infinity’, a very fun and exciting new platform Disney has created to give fans a chance to delve deeper into the Disney worlds like never before. The game seems to be similar to the ‘Skylander’ platform game that has become popular over the last year or so, but I can definitely say that I’m really buying into ‘Infinity’ more than I ever bought into ‘Skylanders’.
The game looks to be a cool way to explore the universes Disney characters live in a way we’ve never really had the chance to before. All the worlds throughout the game will look and feel exactly like the worlds we’ve grown to know and love, making you feel like you’re actually walking around inside the films and TV shows. It’ll also give you the chance to answer questions you may have always wondered, but could never answer, like who would win in a sword fight, Captain jack Sparrow or Phineas? The game is going to be hugely interactive, giving you a chance to also build your own worlds, and create your own unique take on the characters. The idea initially started when ‘Toy Story 3’ was in production, and the idea is what if there was a game where we got to be like Andy, and have all our favorite Disney characters as toys and play with them in new and exciting adventures, making them anything we wanted it to be. It goes back to the basics of everything we ever loved about playing with toys when we were younger, and the game really feels just like that.
I remember playing with my ‘Star Wars’ and G.I. Joe action figures back when I was younger, putting them on missions together to stop the Empire and Cobra Commander, building outrageous stories for why Luke Skywalker and Duke would be working together. As kids, we’re hugely creative, with the skies being the limit of our adventures, and John Lasseter, and the team at Avalanche Studios, took that idea and ran with it, creating a very fun and exciting looking new game out of it. As John Lasseter said during the event, “creativity is the foundation to a better world,” and he couldn’t be more right. The fact that kids are going to get to use that creativity and really build exciting new adventures for themselves with this new platform is highly exciting.
The way the platform will work is you’ll buy figurines of your favorite Disney characters, and once you do, you scan them onto your platform and they’ll then be playable within the game, while unlocking the characters world. The figures will run about $12.99, and the cool thing is that you’ll get a cool collectible figure to have out on display, while getting to play that same character within the game. I think this is not only a cool way to show off and get to know your favorite characters, but also gives kids a cool new way to learn about collectibles. The starter pack set, which will include Jack Sparrow from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, Mr. Incredible from ‘The Incredibles’, and a younger Sully from ‘Monsters University’ will run $74.99, giving you three figures and three new worlds to explore with your new characters. The game is currently slated to land on all the major consoles, so you’ll have a chance to play the game on either PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii-U, and PC, and will launch in June 2013.
I went into the junket knowing very little about this new venture for Disney Interactive, but I definitely walked away with a big smile on my face and I’m excited to see how the game plays once it’s released. There’s so much to look forward to, and I can’t wait to explore these familiar worlds while creating new adventures in them. Are you excited for ‘Disney Infinity’?
