Disney Cruise vs. Disney World: The Advantages of Each

Disney offers so many great vacations now that it’s hard to decide what type you should go on next! A Disney Cruise and a trip to Walt Disney World are two very different types of vacations. I hope this list of  advantages of each will help you decide what to do on your next Disney trip.

Advantages of a Disney Cruise over Disney World:

  1. Price – Increases in ticket prices, resort room rates, and food costs steer some people toward an all-inclusive Disney Cruise. Depending on the month you travel, a cruise can be less expensive. It all depends on the type of WDW package you choose too.
  2. Value – Cruising with Disney is truly luxurious. To have the same experience it at WDW, you’d have to stay at a deluxe resort, like the Grand Floridian and eat at Disney signature restaurants for twice the cost.
  3. Relaxation – WDW trips can be exhausting! All the rushing, stroller pushing and standing can really wear me out! Cruisers are more likely to be well-rested upon returning home. You also don’t have to wake up early to beat the crowds, make it to rope drop or get to your breakfast reservations early in the morning.
  4. Dining – I hear from many guests that the DCL food is excellent! Disney has quality cuisine that many foodies rave about.  Having 24-hour access to food without having to pay for it out-of-pocket makes cruising less stressful.
  5. Characters – If meeting the Princesses such as Anna and Elsa, or Disney characters is important to your children (it IS to mine!) you’ll experience more one-on-one time on a Ship than in the Parks. Character Meet & Greets  are scheduled daily in the lobby, but they also make appearances in the kid’s clubs, like the Oceaneer Club.
  6. Travel Experience – There are many ports and destinations offered by DCL now, such as Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Alaska, Panama and even Norway. You can see the world with your family and experience new cultures and beautiful landscapes.

Advantages of Walt Disney World over a Disney Cruise:

  1. Rides – If you love  the classic Disney rides or thrill rides, you’ll find them at the Parks, and obviously, not on the Ships. Although, AquaDuck is pretty thrilling!
  2. Ease of Access – No early morning exits, missing your ship due to flight delays, transportation to the Port, customs officials, passports, or birth certificates are involved with a trip to Walt Disney World.
  3. Variety – A Disney Cruise Ship has plenty of activities for all ages, but even as an annual WDW traveler, I still haven’t seen and done EVERYTHING there is to do at the Parks. Between the 4 Theme Parks, 2 Water Parks, Downtown Disney, various Restaurants, DisneyQuest and even the Resorts, there is ALWAYS something new and exciting to experience. No two trips ever have to be the same.
  4. Spaciousness – Disney ships provide the largest staterooms in the cruise industry. BUT, being in close-quarters with your family may not be ideal for some. Others feel a bit claustrophobic at the thought of being on a boat.
  5. Connectivity – You have the ability to stay connected to the “outside world”  at Walt Disney World and share your pics on Facebook. Free Wi-fi is available in all 4 Parks and you’ll be able to get cell service during your stay. Cruises experience dead zones at sea, roaming charges, and/or prices to access the internet.
  6. Availability– Disney almost always has the Resort and room types my clients desire when they book at least a few months in advance. You can choose your  own dates and  length of stay. Maybe, you want to do a “split stay” like we do, and experience two different resorts! With a Cruise, you have to choose a sail date and category listed, and Inside staterooms fill up quickly. WDW has many Resorts at all price levels, giving your flexibility with prices.

  1. We just returned from our first cruise. We were on the Wonder for four nights. We were not impressed. We thought the food was mediocre at best, even at Palo for brunch. I commented to the server that the Strawberry soup was quite tasty and he replied, “It’s really just a smoothie in a bowl.” We really did not have anything that we wanted to repeatWith early morning excursions and late night activities we came home exhausted (forget napping in the middle of the day, the noise in the hallways makes that impossible). We did enjoy meeting the characters, but we thought the photographers did a poor job of capturing the experience. They only took posed photos.
